Yorkshire Terriers are characterized by lively behavior, friendliness and intelligence. Like most Terriers, Yorkies enjoy moving around, playing and running. Nevertheless, individual dogs tend to be capricious if not trained properly. Special attention should be paid to obedience training since Yorkies are second to none in barking.

They do perfectly well in an apartment, a house, or a farm. Placing Yorkshire Terriers outside is possible (they are not afraid of getting cold), but not recommended. Yorkshire Terriers have not changed much over the time. The first breed standard appeared in 1898. The breed has acquired many adherents due to its beauty and personality traits.

What attracts many breed owners in the Yorkshire Terrier is its strong will. The dogs are rather independent, yet easy to train. A pleasing appearance and the small size of the dog make some people believe that the Yorkshire Terrier will obey every command and do whatever its owners want it to do. Despite the fact that Yorkshire Terriers are willing to please their owners and are generally loyal to strangers, they do not stand unceremonious treatment.

The breed is inquisitive and alert. No trifle seems to escape its attention. They need careful treatment. When hurt unintentionally, Yorkshire Terriers can make use of their sharp teeth and stand up for themselves.
