Yorkshire Terriers - Pictures - History

There are very few written papers that tell us about the origin of Yorkshire Terriers. Due to this fact, there are a great number of legends and myths associated with the breed and its history. However, most scientists agree that the Yorkshire Terrier originated from an ancient breed of dog used to exterminate rats. There are notes on terriers in some works of the ancient writer Appier, which dated as far back as the second century BC. Some other papers confirm that small, determined dogs that hunted rodents with ease were found in the British Isles. Sailors were surely instrumental in distributing the breed.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a relatively young breed. It was bred in Great Britain in the second half of the 19th century. They were primarily used as ratters. Yet, some specialists do not agree to this opinion. What is definite is that Yorkshire Terriers enjoy close ties with many other terrier breeds.

Official history of the breed can be traced as far back as 1873. The Kennel Club was established to keep a studbook and take care of the entire canine world. The Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1886. That year Yorkshire Terriers got their present day name.
